Organizations for the care and education of the visually impaired report a growing number of children with an autism spectrum disorder in addition to a visual impairment. This group of children poses a problem for their educators. For example, spoken words are extensively used to guide visually impaired and blind children, but that is confusing for children with an autism spectrum disorder. Vice versa, visual materials are preferred when dealing with children with autism, but that is not always useful for visually impaired children.
